Christopher Ward Highlights Oceanic Plastic Pollution With New Dive Watch
Christopher Ward has launched its new C60 #tide, the latest addition to the English watchmaker's popular C60 Trident line of dive watches. The new C60 #tide has been designed in collaboration with Swiss-based supply partner #tide ocean material, and follows in the footsteps of Christoper Ward's limited edition C60 BLUE, created with a #tide strap to raise funds for the Blue Marine Foundation (BLUE).
The new open-series C60 #tide utilises ocean-bound plastic waste which has been 'upcycled' by #tide ocean material into a high-quality yarn which Christopher Ward has used to create a new #tide strap collection. The raw material collected by #tide is also turned into granules for plastic injection, which features in the C60 #tide's deep-stamped, screw-down caseback and the #tide symbol featured on the watch's crown.
The plastic pollution recycled by #tide is acquired by training and paying fishermen across Asia, especially the Philippines, to collect, sort, process and transport the plastic to shore for recovery, helping to both lessen the rising tide of plastic waste entering our oceans, and protecting the livelihoods of local fishers and the communities at threat from overfishing.
As an added commitment to tackling the problem of plastic pollution, Christopher Ward and #tide will together donate ￡5 from every #tide strap that’s sold – either on a watch, or individually – to the Blue Marine Foundation, to support their vital work in marine conservation.
'It’s fantastic to see Christopher Ward pioneering the use of #tide for watch straps,' said #tide founder, Thomas Sciori. 'They were one of the first with the courage and determination to change the material and change their perspective. It proves it’s possible to create a luxurious strap with a social and environmental value.'
'We worked with #tide last year to create a one-off strap for the C60 BLUE – the sell-out limited edition dive watch we created for the Blue Marine Foundation,' said Mike France, Christopher Ward’s CEO. 'The fantastic success of that watch taught us two important things: our team is inspired by environmental concerns, and our customers want to see us do more with eco materials.'
In keeping with the rest of the C60 Trident range, the new C60 #tide is built around its C60 316L steel case with flowing Light-catcher lines and fully-lumed ceramic bezel, all packaged in a dive watch that is depth rated to 600m.
Notable differences from the rest of the range include the organic wave pattern and the use of Super-LumiNova Grade X1 BL C1, which gives the C60 #tide's sapphire dial a 3D look which glows in darkness while maintaining a 'cool and discreet look' in daylight – designed to be 'reminiscent of bio-luminescent algae'. The deep-stamped 3D trident on the caseback, which is typical of the Trident range, has been replaced with a deep-stamped #tide mark and a second blue ring of #tide recycled ocean-bound plastic.
Other small changes include Christopher Ward’s sustainable packaging – a first in the luxury watch industry – constructed from 95 per cent bio-degradable materials. The brand also has committed itself to environmentally responsible shipping, helping to reduce the carbon footprint of every single watch sold.
'We now have the widest selection of ecologically-produced watch straps on the market,' said France. 'We believe small changes can make a difference.'
The new C60 #tide is available from ￡895 on a #tide strap or ￡1,000 on a bracelet and the #tide straps (in blue, black and orange) are available across the Christopher Ward collection.
